Three concerns govern export decisions:

How JPEG compression actually works

Understanding the algorithm helps you tune for the right perceptual tradeoffs. JPEG compression pipeline in essence:

  1. Convert image to YCbCr color space and apply chroma subsampling (commonly 4:2:0 for web).
  2. Split into 8x8 blocks and apply the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT).
  3. Quantize DCT coefficients using quantization tables tuned for perceptual importance.
  4. Entropy encode the quantized coefficients (Huffman or arithmetic coding).

  • Quality setting: controls quantization. Not linear.

The common "quality" slider in image editors is a simple abstraction over quantization tables. That single number behaves differently across encoders. Practical tips:

  • For libjpeg-turbo, quality 75 often balances size and fidelity for web photos.
  • mozjpeg gives better perceptual results at lower quality numbers because of improved quantization and trellis optimization.
  • For print or archival delivery, aim for 90–100 and consider disabling chroma subsampling.

Color profile handling for JPEG

This is the area where many exports fail visually. The core rule in web pipelines: convert to sRGB for display and embed an sRGB ICC profile only if necessary. For print workflows, you may want AdobeRGB or ProPhoto and preserve the profile in the file so print labs can map correctly.

Why sRGB on the web?

Most browsers assume images are in sRGB unless an embedded ICC profile says otherwise. Uploading images in other color spaces without conversion leads to washed or oversaturated results. Always make color profile handling an explicit step in your pipeline.

  • Convert to sRGB and strip nonessential metadata: best for general web delivery and lower support risk.
  • Preserve and embed original ICC: for photography proofs and print exports where the receiving system is color-managed.
  • Convert but keep ICC: convert the pixel data to sRGB and embed an sRGB profile so clients who respect the profile render accurately.

Sharp pipeline: forcing sRGB or preserving ICC

Sharp can preserve existing ICC profiles when you use withMetadata. To force a conversion to sRGB, use a colorspace transform before encoding.

1) Fast web thumbnails (e-commerce)

Objectives: small file, consistent color, preserved copyright, responsive sizes.

  1. Ingest: accept any client profile (WebP, PNG, TIFF, JPEG).

  1. Convert to photographer's target color space if required (often AdobeRGB) and keep ICC embedded.
  2. Avoid aggressive chroma subsampling; prefer 4:4:4.
  3. Quality 90–95 with progressive enabled for web delivery of proofs.
  4. Preserve full EXIF and XMP, including maker notes.
